MANILA, Philippines — Psycho-social counselors of the Department of Health (DOH) are employing art therapy for earthquake-affected children in Mindanao. DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III said their mental health experts have been organizing art sessions in evacuation camps to help children cope with trauma caused by the temblors. “Art therapy is a method being used to help children overcome their fears or trauma. The DOH deployed eight teams composed of five experts in medical, mental health, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene as well as engineers to quake-stricken areas. DOH-emergency management staff director Gloria Balboa said the psycho-social counselors were tasked to provide “mental health and psycho-social support” to the victims.
