DNA Explainer: What is a Tsunami and how is it caused?


The Bureau of Meteorology in Australia also issued a tsunami threat in the offshore territories and islands of the country. Tsunamis can travel at a speed of up to 500 miles an hour in the ocean, making them deadly. Almost two tsunamis are recorded in the world on an average every year but it is only once in about 15 years that the world encounters a destructive tsunami. Most of the tsunamis (as many as 80 per cent of them) are recorded along the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean. The Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 was one of the deadliest tsunamis in recent memory.
