Rahul Gandhi seems to have tied himself up in knots. He maintained that his response was based upon an immediate general perception, made in the heat of movement as a “rhetorical flourish”. The trouble for Rahul now – at the height of the election season – is his inability to express ‘regret’ for the words used. There is a lesson in it for Rahul, who will need to choose his words more carefully in the future. For the BJP, it means additional brownie points in election season.
