The train accident near Kanpur has once again raised serious doubts about safety of rail travel and the general health of the railway network. It also accounts for six per cent of the total employment in the organised sector directly and an additional 2.5 per cent indirectly. In response to a question in Parliament, junior Rail Minister Manoj Sinha recently admitted that human errors on the part of railway staff has been one of the major causes of train accidents. Every Railway Minister in the past has used the Railways as a milch cow to appease his vote bank. Every Rail Budget, they played to the galleries by diverting resources to projects they themselves knew would never be realised.
