It’s astonishing that given the overwhelming emphasis attached to this hurdle race, CBSE authorities couldn’t prevent the leak of question papers. The price for this laxity will be paid by more than 20 lakh students who will have to reappear for Class X maths paper and Class XII economics paper. Having said that, it must also be acknowledged that the CBSE fiasco has damaged the reputation of the HRD ministry. Apart from rusty pedagogical practices, schools, colleges and government-run vocational institutions have consistently failed to the improve the quality of education. The rot in the system manifests in the country’s premier educational institutions’ failure to meet exacting international standards.
