First things first – there is a strong anti-incumbency factor that weighs in against the current Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah. Since Ramakrishna Hegde in 1985, no other Chief Minister has pulled off the uphill task of coming back to power. Barring Punjab, Karnataka is the only major state in India where Congress’s political capital translates to a substantial measure of power. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mounting an assault against the state government, last week, dubbed it as a 10 per cent commission-seeking government. Additionally, Siddaramaiah has been making inroads into the Lingayat camp – a community that accounts for 15 to 17 per cent votes.
