The DMK on Friday opposed the introduction of two Bills in the Assembly seeking to extend the tenure of special officers appointed for rural and urban local bodies for six more months till December 31 this year. Velumani attempted to introduce the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws (Third Amendment) Bill, 2019 seeking extension for special officers in urban local bodies, DMK MLA B. Ranganathan (Villivakkam) recorded the party’s opposition to it. Later, when Mr. Velumani intended to introduce the Tamil Nadu Panchayats (Third Amendment) Bill, 2019 seeking the extension of the special officers’ tenure in rural local bodies, DMK legislator S. Austin (Kanniyakumari) opposed it. Both the Bills listed the cases pending before various courts regarding local body polls and said that the State government decided to extend the tenure of these special officers for another six months. These Bills are expected to be taken up for consideration and passing on the last day of the ongoing Assembly session on Saturday.
