According to Union telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan, DCC has accepted the penalty recommendation from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Trai had, in October 2016, recommended imposing a total penalty of Rs 3,050 crore on Airtel, Vodafone and Idea. While the penalty on Airtel and Vodafone was Rs 1,050 crore each, it was Rs 950 crore in case of Idea. Considering the merger, the combined entity Vodafone Idea will now bear the penalty levied on the two companies. But before imposing the penalty, the DCC decided to seek Trai's views on revising Rs 3,050 crore suggested penalty, citing the 'present financial health of the sector'.
