For Trump, there is no water’s edge for politics, no veneer of nonpartisanship around military or national security matters. In November, also in France, Trump scuttled plans to honour the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery. But Trump’s relationship with the armed forces — and the families of individual soldiers — has at times been uniquely fraught.
