By midnight on 6 June, more than 150,000 Allied soldiers were in Normandy, including 23,000 paratroopers and 20,000 vehicles of all sizes. The guerrillas came down from the hills and killed five Japanese out of the six stationed in the town. For the whole day, the partisans held out against the German attacks, permanently counterattacking. Since 1945, the West has told an enhanced account of the ultimate victory over Nazi Germany beginning with the Normandy landings. As President, I have sworn to this solemn commitment from the very first day that I took office.
