Cyclone may develop along the western coast in next 24 hours, says IMD

New Delhi: A cyclone is fast developing on the south-east Arabian Sea along the western coast, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Monday, while predicting heavy to very heavy rains for Kerala and coastal Karnataka over the next three days. According to the government’s weather department, the low-pressure system formed over the south-east Arabian Sea and adjoining the Lakshadweep area has intensified into a depression early morning on Monday. According to meteorologists, the northwesterly movement of the deep depression will strengthen the western arm of the monsoon current, bringing heavy rains in coastal Karnataka during the next three days. The department has already sounded a warning to the coastal areas on the western coast and advised fishermen to return to the coast. Gale winds speed reaching 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph are likely to prevail over the north Arabian Sea, south Gujarat and Maharashtra coast during the period.
