BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Kedah Customs Department seized more than RM800,000 worth of firecrackers from a container lorry which was attempting to enter the country through here on Tuesday. The firecrackers were contained in 1,122 boxes which were hidden behind boxes of mineral water in the container. Customs deputy director-general (Enforcement/Compliance) Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said the seizure was made at 4pm when a scanner machine at the heavy vehicle entryway of the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint revealed suspicious images in the container. Zulkifli said the firecrackers, weighing a total of 20,755kg, are from China and were destined for sale on the local market. He said the total value of the firecrackers is RM528,930, with unpaid tax amounting to RM312,069.
