Apparently unsatisfied by her answers, officers sliced open her luggage and seized all the cash: $41,377. With her savings taken, Anthonia could no longer build the permanent clinic she had worked so hard for. And thanks to the nation’s civil forfeiture laws, the federal government can seize cash even if they never accuse the owner of breaking the law. In fact, CBP seized over $265,000 in “undeclared or illicit currency” on a typical day last year.
