The British Film Institute’s proposal for a film and television hub was supported by Dame Helen Mirren and Tom HiddlestonIt was backed by some of British cinema’s brightest stars, but a plan to create a film and television hub for the UK was finally abandoned yesterday. The British Film Institute (BFI) revealed that it had dropped its proposal for a building on the South Bank in London after deciding that it would not be able to obtain permission for the £130 million scheme in time. The BFI had hoped to move to a new home near Hungerford Bridge by 2022. It concluded, however, that the planning process could not be completed by the end of next year, as required by leases on the land. The proposal had been supported by leading actors, including Dame Helen Mirren, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston.
