The 'powhiri' that welcomed cruise visitors at Tauranga has come under fire with Ngāi Te Rangi chief executive Paora Stanley labeling it a 'pantomime powhiri.' Criticism is mounting after cruise guests were welcomed to the Port of Tauranga with what one iwi leader has called a "pantomime powhiri". Tourism Bay of Plenty supports and acknowledges the right of local Iwi and hapū to manaaki (welcome) cruise visitors. "We acknowledge Princess Cruises' unreserved apology and hope to work with Princess Cruises and tangata whenua to ensure this never happens again. Powell also said Princess Cruises suggested he meet with the ship captain, an offer that was later withdrawn.
