At a time when the aged care sector is widely held to be facing a looming crisis if, indeed, it’s not already upon us, there’s criticism of the Government’s intention to appoint an Aged Care Commissioner. The reproachful question swiftly arises: why add another level of bureaucracy when people can already complain to the management of aged care facilities, their district health boards, the Health and Disability Commissioner? Whoever becomes the Aged Care Commissioner will be entering a crucible of concerns. Much as there are many high-quality aged care providers, there is a problematic lower tier. Aged care does have a business model in New Zealand, and it’s little wonder there’s a distaste for public money following it in a privatise-then-prop-up dynamic.
