Crown won’t prosecute 35 accused in kidnapping and drug cases, including alleged Montreal Mafia leader

Thirty five people accused of serious crimes like kidnapping and drug trafficking saw the cases brought against them in a major RCMP investigation into the Montreal Mafia dropped on Tuesday because the Crown no longer wants to prosecute them. Federal prosecutor Sabrina Delli Fraine informed Quebec Court Judge Lori Renée Weitzman of the Crown’s position during a hearing at the Montreal courthouse. Pizzi faces charges in another indictment filed in Project Clemenza and he is one of the 11 accused who still have charges pending. But a few of the defence lawyers who represent those 11 people accused the Crown of stalling. It was an apparent reference to a decision made by Superior Court Justice Michael Stober, on Nov. 18, 2015, in a related case.
