Crown stays terrorism charges against Edmonton-area teen accused of trying to join ISIL

Terrorism charges have been stayed against an Edmonton-area teen who was accused of trying to leave Canada to join the Islamic State terrorist group. Nathalie Houle, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Ottawa, confirmed Friday that the terrorism charges against the youth, who is now 18, were stayed. The teen, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act as he was 17 when he was charged in March 2015, had been slated to go to trial in October in Edmonton’s Youth Court. However, defence lawyer Nate Whitling said he received a letter this week from the federal Crown notifying him that the charges had been stayed, but provided no explanation. The first allegation was that on or around March 8, 2015 the teen attempted to leave Canada to participate in an activity of a terrorist group, Islamic State.
