A grandmother who was given a merciful punishment for murdering her granddaughter may end up getting a life sentence after all. Lorraine Smith was jailed in August 2019 after pleading guilty to murdering 13-year-old Kalis Smith. Lorraine Smith, however, was sentenced to 12 years’ jail with a minimum term of six, with Justice Francis Cooke deciding a life sentence would be unjust. But the Crown, who argued for a life sentence, has appealed that sentence.
