Crowds flock to Waitarere Beach for annual Big DigMURRAY WILSON/STUFF Kylah Offord, 5, and dad James Offord look for prizes at the Big Dig. The Levin and Districts Brass Band hosted the Waitarere Beach Big Dig for the 30th time on Tuesday, attracting a crowd keen to win one of more than 300 prizes on offer. The concept involves people using their hands to dig in the sand for discs buried by volunteers earlier in the day. The PhD student said he was sitting at home in Palmerston North when one of his friends suggested they go to the beach for the dig. The prizes were all buried at 10am for the 2pm start time and were hidden about an inch under the sand, Craddock said.
