Crowds clash with riot police in Barcelona as ex-Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont detained in Germany

BARCELONA, Spain — Crowds clashed with police in downtown Barcelona on Sunday as angry Catalans protested the detention of fugitive former leader Carles Puigdemont in Germany. Thousands answered the call by a pro-independence grassroots group to protest in the city centre hours after Puigdemont was detained by German police. He is being held by German police on a Spanish arrest warrant after trying to cross into Germany from Denmark. The German news agency dpa reported that the criminal investigation office of the northern German state of Schlewsig-Holstein confirmed Puigdemont’s arrest. A Spanish Supreme Court judge reactivated an international arrest warrant for Puigdemont on Friday when he was visiting Finland.
