BELGRADE -- Croatian fire fighters and soldiers managed to prevent wildfires from engulfing the city of Split, declaring Tuesday that they had "defended" the Adriatic resort. Fires between the town of Omis and Split have destroyed 4,500 hectares of forest. Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic traveled to the city on Tuesday to assess the situation. As fire broke out in 20 separate locations in just a few hours, the Croatian media has speculated that they were caused by arsonists. On Monday, more than 100 tourists had been brought from the peninsula to safety.
