Critically endangered Regent honeyeaters mistakenly learn songs of OTHER birds

AdvertisementJust like humans learning to speak, many birds learn to sing by associating with older birds of the same species. Some birds learn from their fathers, but regent honeyeaters leave the nest before they learn to sing, so the males need to find other mentors. But the female regent honeyeaters aren't impressed. The study found that in places where there were still reasonable numbers of regent honeyeaters, males sang rich and complex songs. 'We can assume that regent honeyeaters are now so rare that some young males never find an older male teacher.'
