Despite the economic meltdown that followed the war, Attlee went on to establish the National Health Service (NHS). While it has its problems, the NHS for a long time has been seen as the benchmark for public health services. For years, politicians pledged to reform our health service but nothing changed. Martin and Varadkar know this is their opportunity to create their own NHS and finally fix Ireland's health service. Despite establishing the NHS, Attlee himself was voted out of office and Churchill returned in 1951.
