At least 16 people were killed in a series of nationwide protests that were called in March, a report by Amnesty International indicates. The body of Mohamed Mohamed Abdullah who was popularly known as as general in the area was found Monday morning after the shooting. Residents said the gunmen trailed the deceased to his house where they shot and killed him at 2 am. Police with Kenya Wildlife Service officials ambushed the two merchants as they tried to sell the ivory to a man who had posed as a potential buyer. The 4,480 bags had been dispatched from the Kenya National Trade Corporation warehouse in Mombasa and were destined for the bread-basket regions of Western and North Rift.
