Only 7.8 per cent of offences recorded by police in England and Wales led to a charge or summons to appear in court. This was a drop of more than 1 percentage point on the previous year and came as latest official data showed that the overall level of reported crime rose by 8 per cent to 5.9 million in the year to the end of March. Reported knife crime was up 8 per cent to 43,516 and robberies rose by 11 per cent to 85,000, including a significant increase in attacks involving a knife or other sharp instrument.
