Crew members fined for ship stranding in Tauranga


A log carrier, Funing-9690913, lost power when departing the Port of Tauranga and had to drop anchor between Mauao and Matakana Island. Two crew members of the ship MV Funing which was stranded in the Port of Tauranga have pleaded guilty and been fined for the ship stranding. The incident happened when the Singapore-registered log carrier was departing the Port bound for China when it lost power around 12.30am on July 6. The Master, Liang Guang Hong, and Chief Engineer, Chameekara Prasad Nanayakkara, both entered guilty pleas in the Tauranga District Court, on September 10, to charges brought by Maritime NZ under the Maritime Transport Act 1994. Both were fined $3250 and $130 court costs, the maximum penalty for both charges was 12 months imprisonment or a $10,000 fine.
