Solutions have ranged from story-level human fact checking to outlet-level human “trust” rankings, but nearly all have relied on human judgement. Most importantly, both fact checking and outlet rankings rely on human judgement. Every day media outlets across the world watch each other’s coverage. Traditionally we look at hyperlinking activity web-wide, looking at how every website links to every other website. In essence, this database acts as a kind of “You Are Here” media map, showing where each media outlet appears in the global media ecosystem and the kinds of company it keeps.
