Traffic fatalities from crashes in the United States are lower than other leading causes of death, but still substantial. The Northeast may be the safest region in the country on the roads; Wyoming is the most dangerous state. The researchers at the Ann Arbor based institute found that while road fatalities were lower than other causes of death, they were still considerable. The state had the highest traffic crash fatality rate of 24.7 per 100,000 people, followed by Mississippi at 22.6 and Montana 21.7, and the highest percentage of road deaths of all fatalities (3.0%). --Rhode Island had the fewest road fatalities as a percentage of all deaths —0.4 percent— followed by the District of Columbia (0.5 percent), Massachusetts (0.5 percent), New York (0.7 percent) and New Jersey (0.8 percent).
