A new equine sport is rapidly spreading through New Zealand in the form of cowboy challenges. This weekend the Deep South Hooves and Harness club is hosting the first cowboy challenge points competition challenge for Otago and Southland. The club will choose obstacles from the 50 listed by the New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Association, among them dragging a sack, crossing a narrow bridge, negotiating a water crossing, lassoing and backing up and down a hill. Fellow event co-ordinator Cara Scott said the challenge was "another way people can work their horse.
