Although India is the largest exporter of buffalo meat, export of cow meat is prohibited in India and is a criminal offence. After confiscating the consignments, labelled as buffalo meat, the state agencies sent samples to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). “Proceedings were initiated against them in 2016 on account of possessing and trading in cow beef. In a few cases, no response has been received to the showcause notice in spite of repeated reminders,” it said. APEDA, established under the commerce and industry ministry, is responsible for export promotion and development of scheduled poultry and meat products.
