What do people mean when they talk about “paying for the pandemic”? We hear constantly about the billions spent on furlough, business support, testing, all the things that have got us through this crisis. I suspect if you asked the public what the chancellor needs to raise taxes to pay for, these are the things they would point to. It’s certainly how it tends to be discussed in the media. In simple terms, there seem to be two sides of the argument at the moment.
