Covid-19 infections in England rise for first time in five weeks

Infections had been on a downward path since the start of the year, following a surge in the run-up to Christmas. But there are signs this trend has gone into reverse, with the number of people in hospital with Covid-19 also starting to climb. Infections are continuing to fall in Northern Ireland, while the picture is unclear in Scotland and Wales. Around one in 65 people in England is estimated to have the virus, up from one in 70. There were 6,382 people in hospital in England on February 8 who had tested positive for coronavirus, up 5% on the previous week, NHS data shows.
