After New Zealand-based motorcycle tour business Planet Chopper had to cancel its 2020 tours due to Covid-19, the company turned the situation into a positive by organising the ‘Virus Buster Run’ at the beginning of February 2021. Planet Chopper was founded by father and son Mark and Ben Van Leewarden and operates in the United States, New Zealand and India, running annual tours run to Route 66, Sturgis, the Himalayas and throughout New Zealand. Ben Van Leewarden Thirty riders signed up for the ‘all inclusive’ package but everyone was welcome to join in. The purpose of the run was to “twist the throttle on the economy” by bringing business to New Zealand’s hard-hit hospitality and tourism sectors. Ben Van Leewarden The weather turned on for the week-long Virus Buster run, with only three hours of rain during the whole ride.
