Covid-19 could reverse 30 years of progress in poverty reduction

The authors of a United Nations University study found that a setback of that size could reverse a decade of global progress on poverty reduction. “Extreme poverty in Australia’s immediate region is likely to skyrocket,” said co-author Mr Christopher Hoy, from The Australian National University (ANU). Andrew Morley said: “The international child focussed aid agency is launching a US$350m response that focuses on supporting the world’s most vulnerable to combat the impacts of Covid-19. Since 1990, the number of children dying from preventable causes such as poverty, hunger, and disease has more than halved. This pandemic has already swept through the world’s wealthiest countries, and now the world's most vulnerable children are on the front lines with so little to protect them, they said.
