Covid-19: Virus detected unexpectedly in wastewater in holiday hotspots, Ministry of Health says

Covid-19 has been detected in wastewater in Whitianga, a popular beach holiday spot over summer. Sampling of Napier wastewater collected on December 20 returned a positive result, bringing the tally over the past six days to three. A wastewater sample in Whitianga, also collected on December 20, unexpectedly tested positive, which may be due to undetected community transmission, the Ministry said. Covid-19 continues to be detected in wastewater samples collected in Gisborne with the latest detection on 20 December 2021. A wastewater sample collected from Hutt Valley on December 20 detected the Covid-19 virus, which the Ministry said was not unexpected given the Hutt Valley case reported on Wednesday.
