Covid-19: Unaccompanied minors as young as 12 in MIQ cause 'child protection concerns' for nurses union

Returnees who are now out of managed isolation say it's unlikely people will stick to the rules and self-isolate once they leave quarantine. Dozens of children, some as young as 12, are going through managed isolation and quarantine on their own in Auckland and Christchurch – and the nurses union and a psychologist are worried about their welfare. Psychologist Dr Jane Millichamp said many of older children could cope in MIQ, but it could cause “the perfect storm” for a vulnerable young person. A 12-year-old is too young to stay in managed isolation and quarantine alone, a psychologist says. A spokesperson for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner said it was aware of the policy to allow unaccompanied minors in MIQ.
