Some parents say they have no option but to shop with their childrenA children’s rights group and a body representing lone parents have called on the government to stop shops from banning children as part of Covid-19 restrictions. Last week several post offices, SuperValu stores and the Woodie’s DIY chain banned children, even when accompanied by their parents, as part of protocols to deal with social distancing. A number of parents with children who have visited supermarkets have reported verbal abuse. Natalie O’Callaghan, a single mother in Cork whose seven-year-old son Lorcan has autism, said she was called a “moron” for bringing her child shopping. “He needs to be with me as both my parents are in their seventies and have underlying health issues, so I wouldn’t risk leaving my son with them,” she said.
