Research confirmed my hole in the soul was likely associated with loss of my much-loved overseas travel – travel grief - and was probably the source of my unsettling malaise of about a year. I love my incredible and diverse country, more so with every experience of it, and venturing into it certainly eased the travel grief. Renowned grief expert, David Kessler, says finding meaning "allows us to transform grief into something rich and fulfilling". It is a constructive or helpful action or outcome that looks different for each of us and, for me, became this travel grief story. I'm not completely there yet, but have reached a place where I can say: "Good grief, I miss travel", and find that it doesn't hurt ... well, nearly as much.
