This compares to 63 for Italy, which has the highest official mortality rate in the world. This may also explain why comparatively few Covid-19 patients have so far been admitted to hospitals, according to local authorities. On the other hand, Germany could also be failing to identify some deaths caused by the coronavirus. Some scientists have pointed to the quality of health care in Germany as a possible explanation for the low mortality rates.
