Cairo Criminal Court on Saturday set a June 10 session to issue its verdict against the defendants charged in the assassination of late top prosecutor general Hesham Barakat. Sixty-seven defendants are standing trial for killing Barakat, 15 are being tried in absentia, while 52 defendants are in custody. The defendants face charges of premeditated murder, association with a terrorist organization and being in possession of weapons and explosives. The car bomb struck his convoy as it was leaving his home in Cairo. Barakat was appointed as chief prosecutor following the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
