Rekha, said to be India’s first fisher couple, when they were felicitated by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Sudarshan Bhagat at a function organised by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) here on Friday. The Minister also handed over the couple fish seeds of sea bass for starting cage fish farming in sea waters with CMFRI support as an additional means of income. The couple has been venturing into the sea on outboard boat for around 13 years. Mr. Karthikeyan said the government had not yet certified his wife as the first fisherwoman to venture into the sea for fishing. The couple brought to the notice of the Minister that they were struggling to compete with highly equipped boat operators.
