The counting of referendum votes got underway at 9 a.m. this morning, Saturday, for the Roscommon/Galway constituency at the count centre in the Hyde Centre, Roscommon Town. The ballot papers for the Family amendment and the Care amendment are being separated into piles for counting. Returning officer Mary Raftery confirmed that the total electorate for Roscommon-Galway is 66,184. The Family referendum votes will be counted first but there is no current indication as to when this count is likely to be completed. Before boxes were opened, Ms Raftery paid tribute to the late Martin Finan, who had worked on elections for the last forty years.
