Countdown will no longer accept cheques as a form of payment from next month. In a message to customers, it said that from May 23, it would no longer be able to accept cheques in its supermarkets. “This is a follow up communication to let you know that the banks have brought forward the cut-off dates for accepting cheques. Rural Women New Zealand is pushing for banks to continue accepting cheques until all rural regions have access to reliable broadband services. We’re not aware that any previously announced dates have changed.”Chief executive Roger Beaumont has previously said fewer than 1 per cent of customers used cheques.
