A Taranaki hapū is a step closer to having a sacred seaside pā site fenced off and protected from damage caused by public access. At its meeting on Tuesday, the New Plymouth District Council's strategy and operations committee recommended fencing off the pā and initiating a design process for a formal shared pathway connecting Ahu Ahu Rd and Lower Weld Rd. Committee chair Stacey Hitchcock said the plan protected what needed to be protected but also looked at future access options. After the meeting discussion, long-time campaigner Mike Ure, who lives on hapū land at the end of Weld Rd, said he was “happy” council was moving forward with protection plans.
