MELAKA: A Melaka executive councillor (exco) has objected to the reintroduction of teaching Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI), citing students’ poor performance and teachers’ lack of competency in the language as his reasons. Instead, Melaka Public Works, Transportation and Public Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sofi Abdul Wahab (pic) said that English should be made a compulsory pass subject in school at secondary level before PPSMI is to be reintroduced. Mohd Sofi said based on a previous education report, some 10,000 schools in the country found it difficult to cope up with the two subjects when taught in English. He said teachers have also voiced their concerns over the dismal performance of students when the subjects were taught in English. “Students, especially in rural areas, lost interest in both the subjects previously and this would again happen if PPSMI were to be reintroduced, ” he said.
