Council permit required for filming in public places on island - Nation

GEORGE TOWN: Film producers will have to apply for a permit from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) when filming in public places here effective Jan 1. MBPP Licensing and Public Health Standing Committee alternate chairman Ong Ah Teong said the new guideline would apply to the filming of movies, dramas, documentaries, as well as advertisement and broadcasting programmes. “Prior to this, the film crew had to simply coordinate with the Fire and Rescue Department and the police before filming. “From Jan 1, they will still have to coordinate with the two government agencies as well as apply for a permit a week prior to filming,” he said yesterday. In July, a car chase video went viral showing a van with three police cars in hot pursuit through the narrow Campbell Street.
