Trees on South Island Rowing’s land at Lake Ruataniwha are being culled but those on council land are up for consultation. A new interactive website has been launched by Mackenzie District Council to engage with the community on a variety of topics, starting with a controversial Environment Canterbury tree cull proposal. “Environment Canterbury (ECan) are considering the removal of some conifers in the area as part of the National Wilding Conifer Management Programme,” council said. Council also points out it is required, under the Canterbury Regional Pest Management Plan, to manage wilding pines and their spread. A series of maps outlining what is proposed for different sections of trees around Twizel is also available on the website.
