We also know that businesses and governments rushed into data collection back in the day (big data as an idea is, what, 15 years old?) pumping the brakes on data collection, imposing industry regulations and passing real-life laws to constrain how much business and government really need to know about you. In the U.S., the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) spells out consumers' data privacy rights and also attempts to return control to citizens over their data, including the right to be forgotten. These are real ethical and moral questions that shadow rampant data collection and must be addressed by data stewards. Data collection and stewardship might be the buzzwords of the foreseeable future.
