Could this weekend smash records for the hottest mid-winter temperatures? Mild temperatures will be most noticeable in mid-Canterbury in the South Island and most of the North Island, particularly the far north. In the South Island there could be up to 150mm of rain and 100mm in the North Island. Daily maximum temperature records could be broken, although all-time winter highs are unlikely to be smashed. Warm, tropical winds north of Vanuatu are heading towards New Zealand and bringing a load of hot air normally associated with late spring temperatures.
